A little over a month ago LoreleiHI and her service dog Dervish were involved in an auto accident during which Dervish was so critically injured that he could not be saved.
DervishJekyllnHyde wrote about it www.dailykos.com/… here. Can you imagine being deaf and losing not only your beloved pet but your service dog, your connection to the hearing world? This is exactly what LoreleiHI has faced and continues to deal with, along with her own injuries from the accident. This has been a very sad, painful and frightening time for her and we are trying to help her rebuild her life and to get a new service dog.
Finding and getting a service dog is not easy nor is it inexpensive. Making it even harder is the fact that LoreleiHI doesn’t have a car. She depends on rides from neighbors to get where she needs to go. Since there are no charitable organizations in Maine, where she lives, that help people in need get cars either for free or much less than usual, a dependable used car would be a huge relief for LoreleiHI.
There has been help in that so far $5500 dollars has been raised. Also, the insurance company is covering the cost of treatment and medications related to LoreleiHI’s injuries. Unfortunately, they will not cover the cost of a service dog, considered “durable medical equipment” because he was necessary before the accident rather than after. Don’t get me started!
What we are looking to do is raise $4500 which would provide enough for a dog, supplies like leash, collar, mesh vest, winter coat, gentle lead, harness, lunge line, bait bag, vet bills and a leash sheath that says ‘Service Dog’ as well as a clip on badge saying the same and ‘Access Required’.
It would also help provide the all important training. Because of not having a car LoreleiHI would need the trainer to come to her (adding cost) or else would have to find and fund transportation to the training facility, likely both.

The other day a helper came to do a few things that needed to be done for her and brought her apples. She was so thrilled to have a visit and apples, it was the high point of her month.
