Although I know Slim’s real name I will not reveal it. You see, I’m pretty certain that he is undocumented.
We met Slim recently after having a new roof put on our home. There was a problem with our chimney, having nothing to do with the roof, and the company worked hard to help us with it. They sent Slim who can fix anything.
It was really cold and he wore only a hoodie for warmth. I told him my father in law had recently died (I lied) and there was a heavy jacket I would love for him to have. He politely declined, said he was fine.
Up and down that ladder he ran! He figured out the problem and the company was going to send him back the next day with the materials needed to fix it.
Slim couldn’t come the next day… he had to take his little daughter to the ER for a fever and cough. He came a few days later and said that she would be fine. And then went to work. Up and down that ladder.
He got us all squared away and came to let us know. I gave him a Christmas candle to take home to his wife. I wanted to hug him and give him a huge tip but that isn’t how it is done. So I got his name and contact info for handyman jobs. As I said, he can fix anything.
During our conversations with Slim he asked us to correct his English and said he was trying hard to learn and expand his knowledge of the language. He can talk “fascia” with the best of them.
So tonight I am thinking of and hoping the best for Slim and his family. He has done nothing wrong, hurt no one, is working to make his way and care for his family. I wonder if he figures coming to the US isn’t worth it.
If we lose Slim we lose so much. If we lose Trump, we are far better off.

Update… I just spoke with Slim. He has a lawyer. We have offered to help in any way. He has our phone number and will call if he needs anything from us. He sounded upbeat because he is just steps away from citizenship. We will follow up with him.
